Whether you're heading into the mountains for a weekend or embarking on a cross-country journey, a few simple habits can help keep these places open, healthy, and enjoyable for everyone.

Know Before You Go

Conditions can change quickly. Before heading out:

Check current fire restrictions and burn bans.
Verify road and trail closures.
Review weather forecasts, especially in the mountains.
Download offline maps in case you lose cell service.

A few minutes of planning can save hours of frustration—and help avoid dangerous situations.

Respect Fire Restrictions

Nothing ends an adventure faster than a wildfire. If a fire ban is in place:

Skip campfires completely.
Use only approved cooking equipment where permitted.
Never park over dry grass—hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.
Properly dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials.

Even when fires are allowed, keep them small, never leave them unattended, and ensure they're completely cold before leaving.
